Successful ecosocialist conference

The ecosocialist conference held in London on 7th November was very successful.  150 people attended in person, and another 50 joined online.

Topics discussed were socialist planning, green colonialism, worker solidarity, fighting far right and building ecosocialist movements.

The themes that came out of the conference were:

    • Incremental reforms are not enough – we need radical systemic change.

    • Campaigns need to both challenge the wasteful market logic of capitalism and at the same time fight climate change.

    • Ecosocialism should work to revolutionize how we use and think about resources – like campaigns for free public transport campaigns under public ownership.Launch of ecosocialist network

    • To act in solidarity with refugees and immigrants and those forced to move as climate conditions make their lives impossible.

Here is the report on the conference issued by the organisers.

Conference statement

A statement from the conference, with contributions from participants, was also issued.  The main points in the statement were:

  • In 2024, the environmental crisis has accelerated
  • The re-election of Donald Trump as a climate denier and the failure of the COP process highlight capitalism’s inability to offer solutions.
  • A market-driven response would harm workers and small farmers,
  • Instead, an ecosocialist transition—rooted in democratic socialization of industries, wealth redistribution, and international solidarity—offers the only viable solution.
  • Ecosocialists must organize locally and globally, engaging trade unions, communities, and climate justice movements.
  • Campaigning: renewable energy, public transport, sustainable agriculture, and ocean restoration
  • By building an inclusive, global movement, ecosocialism can transform theory into action and confront the root causes of the climate crisis.

Launch of ecosocialist network

The organizers announced the launching of a new ecosocialist action network, asking conference participants to join and take part in the running of the network.  Many responded positively.

The focus on action is a great step forward, since much of the activity around ecosocialism has been theoretical.  As Marx said, interpreting the world is not enough.  We need to change it.
